A practitioner of yoga since the early 1970s, I attended the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco Teacher Training in the early 1980’s and the Feel Better Yoga Teacher Training in Carmel CA in 2020. Since then my emphasis has been on Restorative Yoga, a gentle and therapeutic practice resulting in deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Restorative Yoga involves holding comfortable yoga poses for an extended period, often with the support of props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks. Regular practice serves to:
Reduce stress: RY activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress levels. Regular practice calms the mind, slows the breath and relieves physical tension, leading to a state of deep relaxation and reducing the impact of daily stressors.
Promote relaxation and rejuvenation: By holding poses for an extended period, the body and mind are able to rest deeply, replenishing energy, reducing fatigue, and promoting overall well-being.
Improve flexibility and posture: RY gently stretches and opens up the body, promoting improved flexibility, joint mobility and the release of muscular tension, which allow for better alignment and posture.
Enhance self-awareness: RY encourages mindfulness and self-reflection, leading to a greater understanding of, and deeper connection with, the inner self.
Improve quality of sleep: The deep relaxation experienced during practice can assist in relieving insomnia, reducing anxiety, and improving overall sleep quality.
Promote healing and recovery: The supported poses and gentle movements improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support the body's natural healing processes.
Improve cognitive function: The relaxation and stillness of RY enhances mental clarity, concentration and focus, reduces mental chatter and improves overall cognitive function.
Restore emotional balance: RY provides a safe space for emotional release and introspection, thus cultivating a sense of inner peace.
